About the book

A closer look

Health Care: From Crisis to Creativity examines modern healthcare’s structural failures and the creative redesign required to overcome them. Drawing on decades of clinical practice, academic leadership, program development, and system governance, Dr. Omar M. Lattouf presents a practical vision for more humane, equitable, and sustainable care.

Executive Summary and Strategic ProposalDigitally Enabled Population Health Management and Responsible Artificial Intelligence

Healthcare systems face three converging pressures: aging populations with chronic multi-morbidity, a clinical workforce strained by administrative burden and moral injury, and rising costs reinforced by fee-for-service payment. These pressures are intensified by the “unseen interval” between hospital discharge and outpatient follow-up, when deterioration often goes undetected until emergency readmission.

The proposed response is a proactive population health model that combines continuous home monitoring, virtual care, interoperable records, and responsible artificial intelligence. These tools should strengthen—not replace—clinical judgment.

A regional hub-and-spoke network should concentrate complex care in high-volume centers, while community hospitals and clinics provide accessible primary care, chronic-disease management, rehabilitation, and coordinated transfers. Virtual command centers and home-care teams should extend specialist oversight beyond institutional walls.

Healthcare cannot meet twenty-first-century demographic and financial challenges with twentieth-century operating models. Sustainable reform requires integrated systems that connect clinical judgment, digital intelligence, humane leadership, and continuous care.

Author’s Introduction

When I entered medicine more than four decades ago, healthcare was remarkably simple by today’s standards. The physician-patient relationship stood at its center. Technology supported medicine, but it did not define it.

During my career, I have witnessed—and participated in—one of healthcare’s most profound transformations. Medicine has become a complex enterprise integrating clinical care with engineering, information technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, genomics, public policy, and organizational leadership.

That is the paradox of modern healthcare: technology has transformed our ability to treat disease, but it must never diminish our ability to care for people. The question is how to keep innovation in service of humanity while building affordable, equitable, and sustainable systems.

Healthcare: From Crisis to Creativity examines how healthcare reached this moment, why its systems struggle under growing complexity, and how creativity, collaboration, and principled leadership can shape a better future.

ForewordProfessor Tomas A. Salerno, MD — University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

Healthcare: From Crisis to Creativity is a sweeping, authoritative examination of modern healthcare’s structural failures and the creative redesign required to overcome them. Omar M. Lattouf, MD, PhD presents a work that is both diagnostic and prescriptive.

Lattouf frames the central paradox of contemporary medicine: “Technology has transformed our ability to treat disease. It must never diminish our ability to care for people.” He describes the evolution from a physician-centered craft to an extraordinarily complex ecosystem integrating robotics, genomics, AI, cybersecurity, finance, and public policy.

He does not romanticize the past, nor does he blindly celebrate technological innovation. Instead, he insists that innovation must serve humanity, equity, and dignity. Ultimately, this book is not merely a critique of what is broken; it is a call to leadership.

Three paths forward.
